Why some UK telephone codes cover several places. Check Belfast, Harrogate, Leatherhead, Waltham Cross and the Etchingham/Ebbsfleet distinction.
Geographical number areas can cover several communities and need not follow council or postcode boundaries. A recognised prefix is useful, but it is not proof of a street address, an office or where a call is answered. When a precise locality matters, ask about the full number rather than relying on a broad code.
Northern Ireland uses 028. Ofcom lists prefixes beginning 028 90, 028 95 and 028 96 for Belfast, with other prefixes assigned to other places. In particular, 028 20 is associated with Ballycastle. A business seeking a Belfast-facing number should confirm the geographic association of the full number before advertising it.
Ofcom’s lookup distinguishes sub-ranges within 01423: prefixes beginning 01423 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are listed for Harrogate, while 01423 3, 4 and 9 are listed for Boroughbridge. These are allocation-area distinctions, not a list of numbers available to buy. Check the offered number and its current suitability with the provider.
Ofcom lists 01372 under Esher, while the code is also used for Leatherhead contacts. Describing it as exclusive to one town would be misleading. Keep the actual company address clear and check that the full number is appropriate for the area you intend to serve.
Ofcom identifies 01992 as the Lea Valley area. It can be relevant to a business serving Waltham Cross, but the code should not be presented as belonging only to Waltham Cross. The same principle applies whenever an area-code label is broader than the town name on a business website.
Etchingham contacts use the 01580 area, which Ofcom lists under Cranbrook; Etchingham Parish Council publishes a 01580 number. The 01987 code is listed for Ebbsfleet. Those names and codes should not be combined into an Etchingham 01987 product description.
