London 020 Business Numbers: 0203, 0207 and 0208 Explained

Understand London’s 020 area code, eight-digit local numbers and international formatting. Compare keeping your number with choosing a new contact.

Ask about 020 availability

London’s area code is 020

020 is the London area code. A standard London number has eight local digits after it. Prefixes commonly written as 0203, 0207 and 0208 combine the 020 code with the first local digit; they are not separate area codes. Other first local digits also exist, so these familiar prefixes are not an exhaustive list.

Keep the first local digit when dialling

A number displayed as 020 7XXX XXXX contains eight local digits beginning with 7. Do not drop that 7 as if it were part of a longer area code. The X characters illustrate the structure and do not represent an available number. The safest published contact includes the full 020 number.

Use +44 20 for international contacts

For callers outside the UK, replace the initial zero with +44: 020 7XXX XXXX becomes +44 20 7XXX XXXX. Keep all eight local digits. Use the complete number in click-to-call links and apply the same display format consistently across the website, email signatures and customer documents.

A prefix does not prove an office location

Do not use 0207 versus 0208 as proof of a present-day central or outer London office. A number can be routed elsewhere and does not certify where a business has premises. Choose a number for a real customer contact need and publish accurate address and service-area information.

Compare caller charges and your own charges

These are geographical calls; the caller’s provider and tariff determine the charge or allowance treatment. A familiar 020 prefix does not by itself establish a special rate. Your rental, forwarding and optional features are separate costs to confirm with the service provider.

Compare number and forwarding costs

Keep an existing London number if it still works for customers

If the business already advertises an 020 number, ask whether it can be ported to the proposed service before choosing a new one. This can avoid unnecessary changes to established contact details, subject to portability and the agreed transfer process.
